Computer security is important, and at this stage in the digital evolution, virtually everyone knows about firewalls and anti-virus software. It seems likely the entire computer experience would have ended for everyone years ago without these basic security tools. But as people transition towards running their own blogs, a new foe has raised its ugly head. That foe is spam. You might be familiar with spam from your email inbox, but in most cases, your web browser has a filter that catches the majority of these nuisance emails. But you’re on your own when you set up a website, and spammers can wreak havoc with your comments section or even your associated email account.

Enter Akismet. This plug-in is widely used because it’s effective in the fight against bothersome bot-generated correspondence. Simply download the program and install it to get on the road toward reducing unwanted traffic that will clog your site. Akismet boasts a very high success rate, that is, the percentage of spam caught is greater than 98 percent. Occasionally one or two slip through, but it doesn’t happen frequently. Similarly, it might occasionally grab a valid comment, but that too happens less than one or two percent of the time.

Once installed, Akismet allows you to forget about this negative aspect of the Internet. With well over 21 billion spam messages caught to date, this is one very effective fishing net! Akismet tends to catch over 13 million spam messages a day, so there’s no quitting, either by the spammers or by the trusty software that catches the spam. Just set it up and let it do its thing–Akismet becomes smarter as it catches rogue spam messages. It’s the very picture of artificial intelligence working for you rather than against you as spam bots do! Install the Akismet plug-in and free up time to create content, rather than spending your time deleting malicious incoming content.
