Computers and the Internet have transformed the way we live our lives. Not only do we use these tools for fun – connecting with friends on social networks, watching the latest viral videos, etc. – but we use them to do some pretty important tasks, too. We organize our most important personal information – passwords, bank account information, medical history, and more on the same computers we use to surf the web. It’s convenient, and it saves time.
The problem is, the bad guys know exactly what we’re doing, and they’re always looking for ways to exploit the system and get their hands on that information. You could wake up one day to find out your bank account was emptied overnight, or to learn your identity has been stolen. That’s why it’s so important to understand the basics of internet security. By taking a few simple steps, you can keep your information safe.
First of all, make sure you keep patches to the software on your computer up-to-date. Despite the rigorous testing software undergoes before it is brought to market, bugs invariably exist. Viruses are often created to exploit these “holes” in the software’s defense. Once identified, the maker will issue a patch you can download to fix the problem. Don’t hesitate to do this – just make sure you’re downloading a legitimate patch first, and not spyware masquerading as a patch.
You’ll also want to keep your virus protection up-to-date. Install a good product from a respected manufacturer – preferably one that continually updates on its own so you don’t have to remember to update it.
Finally, be wary of email attachments. Viruses and worms are sneaky – they can hide in emails from people you know and trust. To be safe, assume everything is infected and configure your emails and virus protection to scan all attachments before you open them.
